Governor Abbott Announces Over $1.6 Million In Career Training Grants For Six South Texas Schools
EntSun News/11090276
~ In a move to support career and technical education (CTE) training programs in South Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced today that the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded six Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants totaling $1,697,701 to six schools in the region. These grants will help the schools purchase and install equipment to train 707 students for high-demand occupations such as truck drivers, nurses, and automotive service technicians.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of a skilled workforce in maintaining Texas' position as a leader in job creation and economic development. He stated, "Texas' success starts with a strong and skilled workforce." He also expressed his gratitude to TWC and education partners for their dedication to building the future of the state's workforce.
TWC Chairman Joe Esparza echoed this sentiment, stating that the JET grants will help prepare more than 700 students for successful careers in South Texas. He also highlighted TWC's collaboration with partners across the state to develop a skilled workforce that will benefit Texas employers.
The awards were presented by TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III at a ceremony held at South Texas College in McAllen. The event was attended by state and local officials as well as school staff.

The six JET grants include a $337,820 grant to Donna Independent School District (ISD) to train 310 students as medical assistants in partnership with South Texas College. La Feria ISD received a $262,361 grant to train 150 students as registered nurses in partnership with Texas Southmost College. Laredo College was awarded $109,083 to train 80 students as truck drivers.
Los Fresnos Consolidated ISD received a grant of $347,472 to train 35 students as electro-mechanical and mechatronics technologists and technicians in partnership with Texas State Technical College. Sharyland ISD was awarded $336,101 to train 120 students as registered nurses in partnership with South Texas College. Lastly, South Texas ISD received a grant of $304,864 to train 12 students as automotive service technicians and mechanics in partnership with South Texas College.
Funding for JET grants is provided by the Texas Legislature every two years. TWC uses these grants to cover start-up costs for developing or expanding CTE programs at public community, state, and technical colleges; school districts; and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.
The JET grant awards for the current fiscal year have yet to be announced and will be made public in the coming months. To learn more about TWC's JET grant program, visit their website.
