Governor Abbott Announces $5 Million In Grants For Psychiatry Fellowships To Advance Mental Healthcare Education Across Texas

He also thanked the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for their efforts in expanding and improving mental health services for all communities in Texas.

The grant funding will be distributed among nine medical training centers in Texas. These institutions will use the funds to develop, expand, or administer accredited one-year forensic psychiatry fellowship programs. The goal is to better serve Texans in different regions of the state and make Texas a national leader in forensic psychiatry.

Forensic psychiatry is a subspecialty that applies psychiatric expertise in legal proceedings such as civil, criminal, and administrative cases. It includes evaluations, treatment, and research related to safety and risk mitigation. The list of grant recipients includes Baylor College of Medicine (Houston), Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (Lubbock), Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas). Each institution will receive $555,555 to support their forensic psychiatry fellowship programs.
