Gov. Kemp Signs Legislation Protecting Georgia Agriculture and Natural Resources

ATLANTA ~ In a show of support for Georgia's farmers and foresters, Governor Brian P. Kemp, along with First Lady Marty Kemp, Speaker Jon Burns, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper, Georgia Forestry Commission Director Johnny Sabo, members of the General Assembly, and other agriculture and natural resource officials gathered in Atlanta to sign multiple bills into law.

The signing ceremony was held to recognize the resilience and determination of Georgia's farming and foresting families who have faced numerous challenges in recent years. Despite these obstacles, they continue to provide essential resources such as food, clothing, and building materials for the state.

Governor Kemp expressed his pride in supporting these hardworking individuals through measures like the ones signed today. He emphasized that these laws will help ensure the long-term success of Georgia's number one industry.

Lt. Governor Burt Jones also praised the agriculture community for their perseverance in the face of past and current challenges such as wildfires impacting production and farmland. He assured them of continued support from the government now and in the future.

Speaker of the House Jon Burns echoed this sentiment, stating that Georgia's agriculture industry is the backbone of the state's economy. He reaffirmed the House's commitment to standing alongside farmers and forestry families by providing necessary resources and support.

During the ceremony, Governor Kemp signed 10 pieces of legislation that will benefit Georgia's farmers and foresters. These include HB 1159 which exempts payments received from certain programs from state income tax; HR 1008 which updates the State Water Plan; HB 117 which requires food establishments serving imported shrimp to notify customers; HB 134 which expands tax credits for forestry manufacturers; HB 956 which expands use of Solid Waste Trust Fund; HB 983 which protects prescribed burning by preventing additional barriers on landowners; HB 1310 which designates cotton as official state fabric; SB 306 which streamlines a conservation assessment process; SB 435 which renames the Georgia Development Authority; and SB 551 which removes a code section related to egg candling.

Governor Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp expressed their gratitude to all those who contributed to the legislation signed today. These laws will not only support Georgia's farmers and foresters but also help preserve critical natural resources for future generations.
