GLCPS Students Participate in STEM4Girls Initiative at UMass Dartmouth

EntSun News/11078244
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - EntSun -- Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) students recently participated in the STEM4Girls initiative at UMass Dartmouth

aimed at inspiring young girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics

(STEM) through engaging activities and mentorship.

Thirty-five middle school students joined with other students from around the region to participate in the program. STEM4Girls began in 2010 in collaboration with Greenlight for Girls, focusing on encouraging girls from disadvantaged communities to pursue STEM careers. The program aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields by providing hands-on activities, workshops, and role models to inspire girls in grades 3-8. Each year the program attracts over 200 participants, emphasizing the importance of early engagement in STEM subjects to maintain interest and confidence. This year's theme was "Blue Economy,' which explored the intersection of science, innovation and sustainability concerning oceans and waterways.

"Our students are excited and enriched by this program every year and bring that enthusiasm back to our classrooms," said Stephen Furtado Jr., Executive Director of GLCPS. "We have seen our students flourish from this experience and many have gone on to further study in these fields. We thank UMass Dartmouth for creating this excellent program that inspires girls to take an interest in STEM."

About Global Learning Charter Public School

Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006. In order to generate a culture of personalization, the school setting and class sizes are deliberately small. Students, faculty and administration know each other well and teachers are able to tailor the curriculum to the needs and level of each student. GLCPS offers an exciting and challenging interdisciplinary curriculum that follows and builds upon the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students learn to work collaboratively in teams, use technology meaningfully in their coursework, strengthen all elements of their communication skills, as well as develop the necessary skills to become engaged and ethical contributors to a global society.  GLCPS capitalizes on the exceptional resources of the region (for example, marine sciences), and ties these resources to their curriculum and instruction. Additional information is available on the school's website at www.glcps.org or call 508-991-4105.
