~ Boston City Council Recognizes Transit Driver Appreciation Day
The Boston City Council has officially recognized March 18, 2026 as "Transit Driver Appreciation Day" in the city. This day is dedicated to honoring the essential role that public transit drivers and operators play in keeping the city moving.
The date of March 18 holds significance as it marks Transit Driver Appreciation Day, a global holiday that celebrates transit workers around the world. This holiday commemorates the launch of the first public bus line, known as the "Five Penny Coaches", in Paris back in 1662.
As home to the oldest subway in North America, Boston continues to prioritize maintaining and expanding its public transportation network. This is in line with the city's goals of promoting climate sustainability and improving mobility for its residents. Every day, thousands of residents and visitors rely on public transit to get to work, school, and travel throughout the city. The hard work and dedication of transit drivers ensure that this service remains safe and reliable.

The resolution adopted by the Council also acknowledges the risks that transit drivers face on a daily basis, including exposure to assault and violence. It highlights that expanded assault and battery protections for transit workers were recently enacted at the end of last year.
Boston's transportation systems are supported by thousands of transit drivers and operators across various modes such as buses, subways, rails, ferries, and shared transportation services through MBTA. In addition, there are also workers serving residents through Massport and city-run routes like the Mission Hill Link Bus.
During this week's Council meeting, this resolution was adopted as a way to honor the diligence, professionalism, and dedication of public transit drivers and operators. The Council expressed its gratitude for their service in ensuring safe and efficient travel for all residents and visitors throughout Boston.
