Diopter Labs Unveils "Orbital First Aid" Strategy Following ISS Medical Evacuation

Bridging the orbital care gap: As NASA reassesses ISS medical protocols, Diopter Labs reveals a shelf-stable "clinic-in-a-lens" built to stop space-flight emergencies before they require evacuation.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - EntSun -- In response to the recent emergency medical evacuation from the International Space Station (ISS), Diopter Labs today released mission-readiness data for Bioshare, a dissolvable ocular therapy designed to provide regenerative care in zero-gravity and high-radiation environments.

The Crew-11 evacuation—the first such emergency in the station's 25-year history—has exposed a critical vulnerability: the lack of autonomous, shelf-stable regenerative tools for ocular injuries. Bioshare addresses this by combining the biological power of human amnion with a structural collagen matrix in a self-dissolving lens.

The Regenerative Synergy of Amnion and Collagen

Unlike standard synthetic "bandage" lenses, Bioshare utilizes the natural healing properties of its core components to rebuild damaged ocular tissue:
  • Human Amnion: Naturally rich in growth factors (EGF, TGF-beta) and anti-inflammatory cytokines, the amnion layer suppresses scarring and "resets" the healing process in chronic or acute wounds. It acts as a biological substrate, facilitating the rapid migration of epithelial cells to close corneal defects.
  • Collagen Matrix: The integrated collagen serves as a 3D structural scaffold. In microgravity, where cellular growth is often delayed, this scaffold provides the necessary architecture for new tissue to take hold, mimicking the eye's native extracellular matrix.

"In a remote environment like the ISS or a future Mars mission, you cannot wait for a surgeon or a refrigerated delivery of biologics," said Chris Adams, CEO at Diopter Labs. "Bioshare is stable at room temperature and leverages the body's own regenerative pathways. By providing both the 'blueprints' (Amnion) and the 'scaffolding' (Collagen), we can stabilize and heal sight-threatening injuries autonomously."

Built for the "Space Medicine" Kit

Bioshare is engineered to be applied like a standard contact lens, requiring no specialized training or surgical equipment. Its ability to remain stable without refrigeration makes it a vital candidate for the limited-resource medical bays of the next generation of spacecraft.
