LOS ANGELES - EntSun -- Deaf Hollywood Article Up for Award
Hard-of-Hearing journalist finalist for SoCal Journalism Award
May 31, 2024—LOS ANGELES, CA — On Thursday, May 9, 2024, Now Hear This, a feature article written by LA Press Club and Society of Professional Journalists member, Katie Grant, about creating an equitable film set for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (D/HoH) cast and crew for the December/January 2024 issue of Produced By Magazine, was announced a finalist for the 66th Annual SoCal Journalism Awards.
This is the first article of its kind for Produced By Magazine and their only nomination for this year's awards. There were 2300 entries submitted for nearly 200 categories and the finalists' work "represents the best reporting in the region." Deaf Hollywood
"Now Hear This: It's time to give Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing creatives complete access to Hollywood. The Deaf community has much to say about how that can happen," was nominated in the Magazine category for Entertainment Feature, Film Related. According to Editor-in-Chief of Produced By Magazine, Lisa Garibay, Grant pitched and wrote a "trailblazing" article tackling an issue never covered before in PB. The article (https://producersguild.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Now-Hear-This-Deaf-Representation.pdf) explains how and why producers can and should create an inclusive set for D/HoH cast and crew like how many ASL interpreters to hire, budgeting for that essential cost, and bringing D/HoH writers and producers on from the very start.
Interviewees of the article include Academy Award Winner Marlee Matlin, Sacha Ben Harroche and Patrick Wachsberger, producers of Sound of Metal and CODA, Deaf film editor, Toj Mora, and Deaf actor/producer/writers John Maucere and Shoshannah Stern. Grant, a former actor, was inspired to pitch the article after discovering she has mild hearing loss, wanting to uncover the unfair practices of marginalizing or omitting Deaf Hollywood creatives.
