A Day to Recognize Women's Leadership in Boston

~ Boston City Councilors Durkan and Breadon have successfully passed a resolution recognizing March 8, 2026 as International Women's Day in the city. This global observance, established by the United Nations in 1975, celebrates women's achievements while also calling for continued efforts to promote economic, political, and social equality.

The theme for 2026 is "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls," emphasizing the need to address discriminatory laws, inequitable systems, and harmful social norms that hinder opportunities for women around the world.

The resolution also acknowledges Boston's history of promoting women's leadership in various fields such as government, medicine and biotechnology, education, entrepreneurship, and athletics. It specifically recognizes the groundbreaking leadership of Michelle Wu, Boston's first woman and first Asian American mayor, as well as former Boston City Councilors Andrea Campbell, Lydia Edwards, and Ayanna Pressley.

Through this resolution, the City Council celebrates the contributions of women from all backgrounds in Boston and reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that every woman has the opportunity to lead and thrive.
