Columbia: City introduces new recycling guidelines beginning July 15, 2025

EntSun News/11065293
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia's Solid Waste utility has announced new guidelines for recycling, effective immediately. The City will no longer be accepting glass or certain plastics in their recycling program.

The decision to update the guidelines comes as the City partners with Federal Recycling & Waste Solutions in Jefferson City to transfer some recyclable materials. According to the City, potential contamination from trash, glass, and low-value plastics can damage processing equipment and increase recycling costs.

In order to ensure efficient and cost-effective recycling, the City is asking customers to only use their blue recycling bags for specific materials. These include plastic bottles (such as soft drink, water or soda bottles), plastic containers (such as detergent, milk or shampoo bottles), aluminum beverage cans, and metal food cans.

However, there are certain materials that should not be placed in the blue recycling bags at this time. These include glass bottles and jars, yogurt cups, clamshell produce containers, dairy product tubs, black plastics or takeout containers, Styrofoam containers, packaging material, plastic bags, and trash.

Mixed fibers such as cardboard and paper can still be bundled and left on the curb for collection. However, they should not be placed in the blue recycling bags. Until further notice, these materials will continue to go to the landfill.

Customers with questions or concerns can contact the City's Contact Center at 573.874.CITY (2489) or create a new email for inquiries. Additionally, residents are encouraged to visit BeHeard.CoMo.gov to leave comments or complete a survey regarding the future of recycling in Columbia. The City values input from its residents in developing plans for efficient services.
