Colorado Springs: Statement from Councilman Tom Bailey Regarding Results of Recall Petition
EntSun News/11086431
~ Colorado Springs residents are facing a potential recall election for their District 2 representative, Jillian Johnson. The recall effort, led by a small group of individuals, is seeking to override the results of last year's election and remove Johnson from her position.
Johnson, who was elected by the voters of District 2 in April of last year, has remained committed to making decisions that are in the best interest of her constituents and the city as a whole. She believes that reasonable people may disagree on matters of public policy, but elections exist so that citizens can choose who they trust to make those decisions on their behalf.
However, the organizers behind the recall effort have been vocal about their grievances with Johnson predating last year's election. Despite this, they chose to circumvent the democratic process and did not participate in the election. They also did not field a candidate who represented their views and even encouraged voters to disengage by claiming that Johnson was "unopposed."
Now, just one year after Johnson was elected, these same groups are asking taxpayers to fund a quarter-million-dollar special election because they opted out of the regular one held by the city. It is believed that this is an attempt to rally a small but vocal minority in hopes of achieving what they could not through participating in the normal electoral process.

Johnson believes that this recall campaign is based on misinformation and characterizations that erode trust in local institutions for political convenience. She argues that this kind of divisiveness undermines the rules-based system of government that has long served Colorado Springs and the nation as a whole.
Despite today's disappointing announcement about the potential recall election, Johnson remains focused on continuing her work for the city. As with every matter brought before City Council, she will take time to evaluate its implications, gather input from both experts and members of the public, and determine the best path forward for Colorado Springs.
In conclusion, while some may disagree with Johnson's decisions, she was elected by the voters of District 2 and has been working diligently to fulfill her responsibilities. The recall effort, which seeks to override the results of a fair election, is seen by many as an attempt to undermine the democratic process and push a specific agenda. Johnson remains committed to serving her constituents and making decisions that are in the best interest of Colorado Springs.
