Colorado Springs: Intermittent lane and side street closures planned along 8th Street starting Monday
EntSun News/11092537
~ Colorado Springs - Motorists traveling on South 8th Street may experience some disruptions during the week of May 18 as the city continues its project to replace the 24-inch water main beneath the street. The project, which began in April, is necessary to improve the water infrastructure in the area.
According to city officials, intermittent lane closures, flagging operations, and temporary side street closures can be expected near Moreno Avenue and Garner Street. These closures are necessary for the installation of water valves as part of the ongoing project.
The impacts on traffic are expected to be as follows:
On Monday and Tuesday, May 18-19, westbound Moreno Avenue west of 8th Street will be closed. Drivers will need to take a detour via Lower Gold Camp Road, which reconnects to Moreno Avenue.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, May 19-20, Garner Street will be reduced to one lane with flaggers directing traffic. Motorists should anticipate intermittent delays during this time.
From Wednesday to Thursday, May 20-21, westbound Moreno Avenue east of 8th Street will also be closed. This closure will affect businesses in the area and drivers exiting these businesses will need to take a detour via Abbot Lane to access 8th Street and westbound Moreno Avenue.

In addition to these closures, there is an existing center lane closure on 8th Street from Motor City Drive to Summer Games Drive for installation of the new water main. Within this closure area, no left turns are permitted.
Current detours include:
- Southbound traffic on 8th Street turning left onto Motor City Drive is being rerouted via Automotive Drive and Motor World Drive.
- Traffic coming from Motor City Drive can access southbound 8th Street via Automotive Drive.
- Traffic turning left onto or from Summer Games Drive is being rerouted via Olympic Village Drive at the south end of the closure.
The section of the lane closure near Summer Games Drive is expected to reopen during the week of May 18, once the new water main has been installed and tested. This will allow left turns to resume in this area.
North of this work area, additional structural improvements are being designed for the west side of the Fountain Creek bridge. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
Despite these closures and detours, access to local businesses throughout the project area will remain open and clearly marked at all times. However, motorists are advised to slow down, use caution in work zones, and plan for extra travel time.
For updates on the project and construction alerts, residents can visit ColoradoSprings.gov/8thStreet and sign up for email or text notifications. The city urges drivers to stay informed and be patient as they work towards improving the water infrastructure in this area.
