Denver ~ Denver, Colorado - For the seventh consecutive year, Colorado has been recognized as one of the top states in the United States for its commitment to sustainable building practices. According to the U.S. Green Building Council's 2026 annual top-10 LEED list, Colorado has climbed six spots to secure the third position for the most LEED-certified commercial space per capita.
This achievement is a testament to the Polis administration's dedication to prioritizing cost-saving building practices that also align with the state's climate goals. Governor Jared Polis expressed his excitement and pride in this recognition, stating that "in Colorado, we are investing in smart construction that is energy efficient and saves people money on electricity bills."
The state of Colorado had 67 LEED-certified projects in 2025, covering a total of 16,193,018 square feet of space. These projects not only lower operating costs but also increase energy efficiency, improving building safety, durability, sustainability, and affordability for both homes and businesses.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Colorado earned its spot on the list due to its consistent efforts in promoting sustainable practices. The USGBC noted that "higher education continues to be a leader in Colorado," with a steady percentage of total projects each year. Additionally, there has been a constant number of LEED certifications for warehouses and distribution centers over the past three years.
The USGBC also commended Colorado for using policy as a tool to drive the industry towards a low-carbon, resilient, and equitable future. Executive Director of the Colorado Energy Office Will Toor stated that "Colorado's consistent inclusion on this list reflects our state's deep commitment to finding win-win solutions to meet our climate goals." He further emphasized that energy efficiency not only decreases climate emissions but also lowers utility bill costs for owners and renters while reducing air pollution and improving indoor comfort.
Colorado's continued presence on the top-10 LEED list showcases its leadership and dedication to creating a more sustainable future. With the state's unwavering commitment to promoting energy-efficient building practices, it is well on its way to achieving its bold climate goals.
