Colorado: Governor Polis, State Legislators Highlight the HOME Act, a Proposal to Breakdown Barriers to New Homes and Save Coloradans Money

FORT COLLINS ~ Fort Collins - In a press conference held today, Governor Jared Polis, along with state legislators and local leaders, unveiled a new proposal aimed at making housing more affordable for Coloradans. This initiative is part of Colorado's ongoing efforts to lower the cost of housing and provide financial relief to families.

Governor Polis expressed his enthusiasm for the proposal, stating that it is a significant step towards removing government barriers that hinder the construction of new homes. He believes that by unleashing the free market, more homes can be built at affordable prices. "In Colorado, we are taking action from every angle to address our housing needs and this proposal does just that," said Governor Polis.

The proposed HOME Act aims to remove obstacles in building new homes near transit centers and local businesses. It will allow schools, mission-driven organizations, and local governments to utilize underutilized land for creating much-needed housing in communities. To showcase the potential of this initiative, Governor Polis and Representative Andy Boesenecker announced the HOME Act at Oak 140 - an example of how underutilized land can be transformed into new homes for Colorado families. This project is a result of a partnership between Housing Catalyst and the Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and will focus on providing affordable housing for the workforce in downtown Fort Collins.

Representative Boesenecker emphasized the need for creative solutions to address Colorado's shortage of over 100,000 homes. He believes that by reducing barriers and leveraging existing land, this legislation can help bridge the gap in affordable housing. "By cutting red tape and utilizing underutilized land in central locations, we can spur the creation of affordable housing where people live, work, and play," said Representative Boesenecker.

Earlier in the day, Governor Polis met with leaders from the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) to discuss progress on creating Colorado's third medical school. Funded by HB24-1231, the College of Osteopathic Medicine at UNC aims to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the state and ensure access to quality care for all Coloradans. "We face a dire shortage of healthcare professionals not just in Colorado, but across the country. This new medical school at UNC will create new opportunities for students and strengthen our healthcare workforce," said Governor Polis.

Governor Polis also visited ABC East Child Development Center in Greeley to celebrate the opening of enrollment for the 2026-27 Universal Free Preschool program. This initiative, which saves families over $6,000 per year on childhood expenses, aims to provide a strong start for young Coloradans. "I'm proud of our progress in making childhood education affordable and accessible for everyone," said Governor Polis.

In addition to these events, Governor Polis also visited Clothes Pony & Dandelion Toys - a local small business in Fort Collins. He encouraged Coloradans to support small businesses during the holiday season, stating that they are the backbone of the economy. "There is no better time to support local businesses than during the holidays. Shop local," said Governor Polis.

The proposed HOME Act and other initiatives announced by Governor Polis today demonstrate Colorado's commitment to addressing housing needs and providing financial relief to families. With these efforts, it is hoped that more Coloradans will have access to affordable housing and quality education, ultimately leading to stronger communities across the state.
