DENVER ~ Denver - On Monday, April 13, 2026, flags across the state of Colorado will be lowered to half-staff in honor of former United States Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Governor Jared Polis made the announcement today, stating that the flags will remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on all public buildings.
Senator Campbell was a dedicated public servant who served in various roles including as a member of the Colorado state house, the U.S House of Representatives, and the United States Senate. He also represented Colorado as a member of the 1964 Olympics judo team. Governor Polis praised Senator Campbell's commitment to bipartisanship and his efforts to strengthen tribal relations.

"Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell served with compassion and devotion, addressing issues that were important to Coloradans. His leadership has made both Colorado and our nation stronger," said Governor Polis.
The decision to lower flags on the day of Senator Campbell's memorial was previously announced by Governor Polis. In that statement, he reflected on Senator Campbell's legacy as a veteran, Olympic athlete, and public servant. The governor acknowledged that his contributions have left a lasting impact on both the state and country.
The public memorial service for Senator Campbell will take place at 1 pm on April 13, 2026 at the Sky Ute Event Center in Ignacio. It is expected to be attended by many who wish to pay their respects and honor his memory.
