Colorado: Governor Polis Celebrates Overall Population Increase, Population Increased in Counties with Most Housing Construction
EntSun News/11087863
DENVER ~ According to new county-level Census data released today, Colorado is experiencing a significant increase in population growth in counties with the highest rates of new housing construction. The U.S. Census Bureau's latest data shows that Douglas, Larimer, and Weld counties have seen the strongest positive net migration since the 2020 Census.
Governor Polis commented on the importance of breaking down barriers that hinder new home construction, stating that it is crucial for ensuring that Colorado remains the best place to live, work, and play. He emphasized the need for available, affordable, and accessible housing to attract more people to experience all that Colorado has to offer.
The data also revealed that 24 counties across Colorado have experienced declines since the 2020 Census. This trend is primarily attributed to national factors such as slower growth, housing affordability issues, changes in immigration policy, and fewer people moving due to higher interest rates and aging in place.

However, Colorado has been proactive in addressing these challenges by implementing measures such as building more housing near transit and allowing various organizations to construct homes on underutilized land. The state has also made significant investments in affordable housing through Proposition 123 funding. This initiative has supported over 10,000 new homes across Colorado, including in rural communities that have historically had limited access to state support for affordable housing.
In January of this year, Governor Polis celebrated another milestone as the Census Bureau's vintage population estimates showed that Colorado's population had surpassed 6 million for the first time ever. As of July 1st, 2025, the state's population reached a record high of 6,012,561.
The latest Census data highlights the importance of addressing housing affordability and accessibility in order to sustain Colorado's growth and maintain its status as a desirable place to live. With continued efforts towards providing adequate housing options for all residents, Colorado can continue to thrive as a top destination for individuals and families alike.
