Colorado: Governor Polis and the Division of Criminal Justice Announce $3.3 Million in Justice Assistance Grant Funding to Support Safer, Stronger Communities

LAKEWOOD, Colo. ~ Lakewood, Colorado - Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) have announced the availability of $3.3 million through the 2026 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. This funding aims to support state, local, tribal, and nonprofit organizations in their efforts to prevent and reduce crime, strengthen public safety, and enhance Colorado's criminal justice system.

Governor Polis stated that the decrease in crime across Colorado in recent years is due in part to investments in community-based strategies that have been proven effective through data analysis. He believes that this funding will further strengthen public safety agencies and support innovative solutions driven by data to reduce violence, improve behavioral health outcomes, assist victims, and enhance public safety throughout the state.

The application deadline for this grant is July 10, 2026 at 11:59 p.m., with the award period running from April 1, 2027 to March 31, 2028. To assist potential applicants, the Division of Criminal Justice will be hosting a virtual Application Workshop on June 10, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During this workshop, JAG and Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) grant managers will provide an overview of program requirements, application components, funding priorities, and tips for developing a competitive application.

Administered by the Office of Adult and Juvenile Justice Assistance within the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice and funded by the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program supports efforts to reduce crime, delinquency, recidivism, and victimization through evidence-based approaches that involve multiple disciplines and are driven by community input.

According to Matthew M. Lunn, Director of the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice,"Justice Assistance Grant funding provides communities with the resources needed to address some of Colorado's most pressing public safety challenges." He believes that these investments in areas such as behavioral health, violence prevention, victim services, and criminal justice innovation will lead to sustainable solutions that improve safety and outcomes for all residents of Colorado.

The JAG funds can be used for various programs and initiatives in areas such as law enforcement, prosecution, courts, prevention and education, corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, planning and evaluation, crime victims' protection, mental health programs, state crisis intervention court proceedings, public safety unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and counter-UAS programs. The funding can be utilized for training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, technical assistance, and information systems that contribute to improved public safety and criminal justice outcomes.

Eligible applicants include municipalities, counties, state agencies, special districts, federally recognized Tribal governments,and nonprofit organizations conducting public safety projects that complement government and law enforcement efforts. Nonprofit organizations engaged in community violence intervention,n eighborhood-based safety initiatives,victim services,and criminal justice support programs are encouraged to apply.

The Governor-appointed Justice Assistance Grant Board is expected to announce funding recommendations in early October 2026 after reviewing the applications.
