City of Tacoma Launches 'Tidy-Up Tacoma: Summer 2026' With Major Gateway Cleanup Effort
EntSun News/11093874
~ Tacoma Launches Tidy-Up Initiative for Summer 2026
Tacoma, WA- Mayor Anders Ibsen, along with District 1 Council Member John Hines, District 4 Council Member Sandesh Sadalge, and Andrea Haug from Litter Free 253, joined members of the Tacoma business community and City crews at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and South 26th Street today to kick off the Tidy-Up Tacoma: Summer 2026 campaign. This citywide cleanup effort is focused on Tacoma's major gateway corridors and visitor routes in preparation for a busy summer season filled with graduations, parades, waterfront celebrations, and sporting events.
Equipped with high-visibility safety gear, litter grabbers, and heavy equipment including the City's high-capacity Litter Vac machinery, City crews worked tirelessly to clear roadside debris and restore public spaces. "Today is a perfect example of what makes Tacoma so special: our people stepping up together to show pride in our city," said Mayor Ibsen. "We know this summer is going to bring thousands of families, neighbors, and visitors downtown to celebrate. By accelerating our cleanup efforts now, we are ensuring our gateways are clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone."

Council Member Hines also expressed his love for Tacoma's willingness to come together and clean up their city. "We have a long history of community-led litter clean-ups and committed residents that dedicate themselves to tidying up Tacoma for all of us," he said. "Litter cleanups are not only an easy way to make a big impact in our city but also an amazing community building and civic engagement opportunity." He encouraged residents to get involved through programs like Adopt-a-Spot and Neighborhood Litter Patrols which provide all necessary gear for free.
Council Member Sadalge emphasized the importance of cleaner streets and public spaces as he stated that "our residents have made it clear that cleaner streets, public spaces, and gateways matter." He also highlighted the multitude of resident-led community cleanups in District 4 and the strategic use of Tidy-Up Tacoma and community partnerships to have the greatest impact this summer.
The Tidy-Up Tacoma: Summer 2026 campaign not only focuses on environmental maintenance but also on public safety and human services. The City's Homeless Engagement Alternative Liaison (HEAL) Team is conducting proactive, services-first outreach along high-traffic transit corridors as part of this initiative.

To support the momentum of the summer initiative, the City is offering specialized tools to empower residents and private property owners. These include a data dashboard where community members can track cleanup progress and litter collection data, a volunteer support package providing safety gear and cleanup supplies for community groups, and a graffiti removal partnership for eligible private property owners.
Andrea Haug from Litter Free 253 expressed her appreciation for the partnership between residents and local government in caring for their shared spaces. "Together, we are proving that the best solutions happen when residents and local government work side by side to care for the places we all share," she said.
The City encourages residents to continue using the 311 system to report areas needing attention so that resources can be deployed efficiently.
