City Of Spokane Partners With Meals On Wheels To Purchase Cooling Fans For Local Seniors, Residents With Disabilities
EntSun News/11089022
~ Spokane City Council President Betsy Wilkerson and Mayor Lisa Brown have announced a partnership with Meals on Wheels to provide cooling fans for local seniors and residents with disabilities. The initiative aims to support vulnerable community members as the city prepares for warmer months.
According to Erin Hut, Director of Communications for the City of Spokane, the decision to purchase cooling fans was made in order to prioritize the health and well-being of seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income residents. The funds will be sent directly to Meals on Wheels, who will distribute the fans to those who may be especially vulnerable to heat or have limited access to cooling resources.
Council President Wilkerson emphasized the importance of being proactive and intentional in supporting vulnerable community members during extreme heat and smoke events. She stated, "By sending funds to Meals on Wheels, we're helping ensure seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income residents have the fans they need to stay cool and breathe easier."

Mayor Brown echoed this sentiment, highlighting that something as simple as a fan can make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors. She said, "This is a small but important way we can support our seniors and help them stay safe in their homes."
The $1,000 purchase was made possible through the City of Spokane's inclement weather fund. Gail Golden, Development Director for Meals on Wheels Spokane, expressed gratitude for the city's support at a critical time. She stated that access to something as simple as a fan can significantly improve comfort and help older adults remain safe in their homes during hot weather.
The partnership between the City of Spokane and Meals on Wheels demonstrates a commitment to caring for vulnerable community members during challenging times. This investment not only provides nutritious meals but also shows care, connection, and dignity towards seniors in need. As temperatures rise this summer, these cooling fans will play an important role in keeping local residents safe and comfortable.
