City of Long Beach to Host Recycle Your Bicycle Event on May 2
EntSun News/11087904
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach residents are being encouraged to participate in the upcoming Recycle Your Bicycle event, organized by the City of Long Beach in partnership with WM (formerly Waste Management) and Pedal Movement. The event, which aims to reduce waste and expand access to transportation, will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at various parks across the city.
According to Mayor Rex Richardson, the event is a demonstration of how small actions can have a big impact on the community. By keeping usable materials out of landfills and providing refurbished bicycles to those in need, the event supports sustainability, mobility, and opportunity all at once.
Residents are invited to bring gently used non-motorized bicycles (no e-bikes) to any of the four designated drop-off locations between 9 a.m. and noon. These bicycles will be refurbished and donated to local nonprofit organizations for redistribution. Bicycles that cannot be restored will be recycled for parts.
The four designated drop-off locations are Silverado Park, Recreation Park, Houghton Park, and Whaley Park. Bob Dowell, Director of Energy & Environmental Services for Long Beach, expressed gratitude for community members who take the time to drop off their bicycles. He also highlighted the importance of their support in helping refurbish and redistribute bicycles to those who will benefit from them.

The Recycle Your Bicycle event aligns with Long Beach's waste-reduction and emission-reduction goals outlined in the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan by promoting bicycles as a sustainable mode of transportation. It also reflects a commitment to serving the community by providing cost-effective alternatives to vehicles and reducing waste through bicycle refurbishment.
In 2024, when the event was last held, 178 bicycles were collected with 56 being refurbished and donated while 122 were recycled for parts. The City's Health and Human Services Department has previously supported bicycle redistribution through programs such as Multi-Service Center (MSC) and Walk and Roll. Pedal Movement has also played a role in connecting bicycles with local nonprofit organizations serving youth.
The City has recently hosted a Recycle Your Textiles event and the first Shred Event of the year, with more to come. Additionally, a Fixit Clinic will be held on April 25, with plans for more clinics in the future to support waste reduction in the community.
The Recycle Your Bicycle event is also part of Long Beach's annual Bike Month activities, which will be announced in the coming weeks. For more information on the event, residents can visit lbcity.info/bikerecycle2026.
