City of Colorado Springs celebrates National Volunteer Week, highlights community impact

~ Colorado Springs, CO - The City of Colorado Springs is honoring National Volunteer Week, which takes place from April 19th to 25th, by recognizing the residents who have dedicated their time and talents to improve the community in meaningful ways. On Tuesday, City Council approved a resolution acknowledging National Volunteer Week and paying tribute to volunteers across the city.

In 2025, thousands of volunteers supported various programs and services offered by the city's departments. Their contributions amounted to millions of dollars in value and helped strengthen neighborhoods, public spaces, and community connections.

The impact of volunteer efforts was evident throughout the city. Over 103,710 pounds of food were distributed, serving 2,111 families. Additionally, nearly 79,000 youth participants were supported through sports programs. More than 5,900 students were able to connect with nature through field trips and education. Volunteers also played a crucial role in caring for 415 acres of parkland and maintaining 32 miles of trails. They also removed over 2,400 bags of trash from public spaces.

Volunteers also played a significant role in programs that support public safety, environmental stewardship, and civic engagement. The Community Advancing Public Safety (CAPS) Program saw over 40,000 hours contributed by volunteers. At the airport, 50 Airport Ambassador volunteers welcomed visitors to Colorado Springs with a total of 2,770 hours served. Through the Stormwater Enterprise's Adopt-A-Waterway Program, 455 volunteers removed over 7.5 tons of litter from waterways. Additionally, more than 100 residents served on City boards, commissions and committees advising on key issues such as land use, public safety and parks.

One area where volunteer efforts made a significant impact was in Colorado Springs Parks Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS). With over 3,200 volunteers contributing more than 135,000 hours of service in 2025 alone, PRCS volunteers were responsible for park maintenance, trail stewardship, recreation programming, and environmental education throughout the city.

The long-term value of volunteer stewardship was evident in programs like Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Trail. These initiatives rely on volunteers to help maintain hundreds of acres of parkland, care for dozens of miles of trails, and ensure that public spaces remain safe, accessible, and welcoming for all.

Volunteer efforts do not stop with National Volunteer Week. Initiatives like Keep It Clean COS continue year-round. During a recent cleanup event on March 14th, 2026, volunteers collected 153 bags of trash and 13 shopping carts. This highlights the ongoing need for community-driven stewardship and the significant impact it has on keeping the city clean.

As part of National Volunteer Month, residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in upcoming community cleanup efforts. On Tuesday, April 28th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., local businesses are invited to join the Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs' Clean and Safe Downtown Ambassadors and Richard's Rubbish Roundup to clean and improve outdoor areas throughout downtown.
