City of Boston, Dana-Farber Announce Funding For Cancer Screenings For Firefighters
EntSun News/11092695
~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have joined forces to provide crucial funding for early cancer detection services for Boston firefighters. The $150,000 contribution from Dana-Farber will support specialized screening protocols designed to identify cancer at its earliest stages for 500 firefighters across the city.
This initiative comes as a response to the loss of federal grant support for cancer health screenings, which has impacted the city's efforts to promote health and wellness among its firefighters. Mayor Wu expressed her gratitude for the partnership with Dana-Farber, stating that "our firefighters show up every day for our community and are constantly training to use the most innovative technology and tools to save lives." She added that this same determination is being used to find new ways to protect firefighters' lives by addressing occupational cancer.
According to Boston Fire Commissioner Rodney Marshall, while personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus provide critical protection, they do not eliminate all exposure to harmful substances. With modern fires burning hotter and producing more toxic fumes, regular screening is necessary to reduce long-term health risks and improve survival outcomes.

The funds provided by Dana-Farber will expand the city's ongoing efforts to address occupational health risks for firefighters. These brave individuals are often exposed to carcinogens and toxic smoke in the line of duty, significantly increasing their risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory illnesses.
Dr. Benjamin L. Ebert, president and CEO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, emphasized their mission of ensuring that every cancer patient has access to high-quality prevention and care regardless of their zip code or occupation. He stated that they are pleased to support Mayor Wu's firefighter cancer screening program by bringing vital resources directly to Boston's firehouses and connecting firefighters with educational resources, care navigation, and oncology expertise.
Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Boston, also expressed her gratitude towards Dana-Farber for their investment in providing essential cancer screenings for the city's firefighters. She stressed the importance of early detection and how it can save lives, stating that Dana-Farber has been an exceptional partner in keeping Bostonians healthy and advancing the city's health equity agenda.

United Diagnostic Services, a company specializing in early cancer detection, will lead the screening process and expand cancer screenings across all Boston Fire Department locations. The screenings will include blood and urine testing, as well as low-dose CT scans.
City Councilor Sharon Durkan, who represents District 8, commended Dana-Farber for their commitment to taking care of Bostonians. She stated that when federal grant funding ended, they could not afford to wait for a solution and are grateful for Dana-Farber's visionary leadership in helping them meet this challenge.
Sam Dillon, President of Boston Firefighters IAFF Local 718, also expressed his gratitude towards those who recognize the severity and importance of occupational cancer among firefighters. He emphasized the need for early detection and immediate treatment in their fight against cancer in the fire service.
Thanks to this partnership between Mayor Wu, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, IAFF Local 718, and the Boston Fire Cancer Foundation, Boston firefighters will have access to comprehensive early cancer detection services that can potentially save lives. This initiative showcases the city's commitment to protecting those who risk their lives every day to protect others.
