City of Boston and MBTA Announce Plans For Summer Street to Support World Cup Matches
EntSun News/11093756
~ Boston, MA - The City of Boston and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) have announced a joint plan to address Summer Street closures around South Station in preparation for the upcoming World Cup matches at Boston Stadium. The plan aims to support both local and regional commuters, provide neighborhood access, and ensure a smooth experience for the thousands of visitors expected to attend the seven matches this summer.
Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her pride in Boston being ranked as the safest US host city for the World Cup and highlighted the city's track record of successful coordination between various agencies when hosting major events. "We're counting down the days to showcase our city this summer and look forward to connecting visitors with all that Boston has to offer," said Mayor Wu. She also emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety, efficient access, and clear coordination during large-scale events.
Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng echoed Mayor Wu's sentiments, stating that safety is always their top priority. He thanked Mayor Wu and City staff for collaborating with them on a plan that supports both global World Cup passengers and the greater Boston community.

As part of this plan, Summer Street will be fully closed to vehicular traffic between Dorchester Avenue and Atlantic Avenue for eight hours during four matches on June 13, June 19, June 29, and July 9. For three other matches on June 16, June 23, and June 26, Summer Street will be open to vehicular traffic on the westbound (north) side only. The direction of travel will be determined based on demand and coordinated by public safety officials.
In addition to these closures, public safety officials may implement additional temporary traffic restrictions or lane closures as needed for crowd management purposes. This is all in an effort to ensure public safety during these high-traffic events.
During all seven matches, the MBTA will set up temporary security screening and queuing space on Summer Street between Dorchester Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. As a result, the street will be fully closed to vehicular traffic in the interest of employee safety. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid the area if possible and to utilize public transportation if they need to travel to the area.
Following each match, the City of Boston and the MBTA will review the Summer Street closures and make any necessary adjustments to improve operations and enhance the visitor experience. With this plan in place, the MBTA has withdrawn its temporary eminent domain letter to the City of Boston, and the City has issued them with an Occupancy Permit.
The City of Boston and the MBTA are committed to working together to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all during this exciting time for Boston.
