City of Bloomington and INDOT Reach Agreement to Reduce Tree Removal Along Pete Ellis Drive and E. 10th Street
EntSun News/11087142
~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) have come to a preliminary agreement that will result in the preservation of eight mature oak trees along E. 10th Street near Pete Ellis Drive. This decision comes after INDOT initially notified the City that up to fifteen oak trees would need to be removed as part of planned work in the state right-of-way near the Pete Ellis Drive post office.
After receiving feedback from concerned residents about the potential loss of mature tree canopy along the corridor, the City raised their concerns to INDOT. Through collaborative efforts and discussions, INDOT revised their plans and reduced the number of trees expected to be removed to seven, preserving eight mature oaks along Pete Ellis Drive.

The proposed agreement will be presented to the Bloomington Board of Public Works for discussion on March 23. However, additional procedural steps related to temporary right-of-way access may also be required before work can begin. It is expected that tree removal will be completed prior to April 1.
The City of Bloomington expressed their appreciation for INDOT's willingness to work collaboratively and consider community feedback as this project moves forward. Residents are encouraged to contact INDOT directly through INDOT4U at 855-463-6848 or indot4u.com for any project-specific questions or concerns during construction.
This decision reflects a shared effort between the City and INDOT to balance infrastructure improvements with preservation of Bloomington's urban tree canopy. The reduction in tree removal is a positive outcome for both parties and showcases their commitment towards finding solutions that benefit both the community and necessary projects.
