CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Celebrates Start of 2026-27 School Year with Visits to Schools Across the City

This week, Mayor Brandon Johnson will be joining CPS Superintendent & CEO Dr. Macqueline King in celebrating the beginning of the 2026-27 school year. The two will be visiting schools across Chicago to connect with students, families, and educators while highlighting the city's commitment to providing safe, welcoming, and engaging school environments for young people.

Mayor Johnson expressed his belief that every Chicago student deserves to feel welcomed and supported as they embark on their educational journey. He emphasized the importance of encouraging students to fully participate in their education and extracurricular activities, as it sets them up for success in reaching their full potential. As students return to classrooms across the city, Mayor Johnson's administration will continue investing in people and partnerships that help young people thrive, while also ensuring that every student has the opportunity to build a bright future right here in Chicago.

Throughout the week, Mayor Johnson will be joined by school officials, City representatives, Safe Passage workers, Chicago Principles & Administrators Association, Chicago Teachers Union and Service Employee International Union leadership, students and families at schools on the West and South Sides. Together they will highlight the importance of strong school communities and a safe and supportive start to the academic year.

CPS Superintendent/CEO Dr. Macquline King shared her excitement for the first day of school as it opens doors to new possibilities for every student. She warmly welcomed students and families back to schools where she hopes they will find joy in learning, feel a true sense of belonging, and build meaningful connections with their teachers and classmates. Dr. King also expressed her honor in having the opportunity and responsibility to nurture students' interests, skills, and sense of possibility that will inspire lifelong learning and help them pursue a bright future.

The full schedule of Mayor Johnson's back-to-school visits includes stops at George Leland Elementary, Roswell B. Mason Elementary, Madero Middle School, Centers for New Horizons, Dubois Elementary School, Senn High School, Lake View High School, and Curie Metro High School. At each school, Mayor Johnson and CEO King will participate in various activities such as walking the Safe Passage route with parents and students, providing words of encouragement via the morning announcements PA system, engaging with students and staff, and joining a student pep rally.

These visits by Mayor Johnson highlight the district's Show Up. Belong. Engage. initiative, which focuses on consistent attendance, a strong sense of connection to school communities, and active participation in the classroom.
