EntSun News/11087571
CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with Alderman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th), Department of Planning and Development Commissioner Ciere Boatright, and other local leaders, gathered today to celebrate the grand opening of TimeLine Theatre Company's new permanent home in Uptown. The project, which was backed by the city, transformed a former warehouse at 5035 N. Broadway into a dynamic cultural destination that will serve as an anchor within Uptown's historic entertainment corridor.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of arts and cultural spaces in connecting communities and driving economic vitality. He stated that this investment will not only attract residents and visitors but also strengthen the city's cultural fabric. The mayor expressed his pride in standing alongside TimeLine Theatre Company, Alderman Manaa-Hoppenworth, and all those who played a role in making this project possible.
Following the opening celebration, an open house was held for members of the public to explore the new space. Guided tours were offered, along with information about TimeLine's history and vision, interactive activities, and a live DJ performance.

Mica Cole, Executive Director of TimeLine Theatre, spoke about the significance of this day as it marks the first opportunity for Chicagoans to see what is yet to come - a new live theatre space designed for both art and community. She mentioned that there are still some finishing touches to be done before their first production in May but with the support of Mayor Johnson, city officials, community leaders, donors, subscribers, and their dedicated staff and team members, it is clear that this new facility will be a lasting cultural destination in Uptown.
The project received $14 million in Tax Increment Financing from the City of Chicago as part of Mayor Johnson's commitment to supporting arts and neighborhood vitality. DPD Commissioner Ciere Boatright also expressed her excitement about TimeLine's new home being a catalyst for additional investments in the area, leveraging its improved transit infrastructure, diverse dining scene, and other pedestrian-friendly amenities.
The opening of this new facility is the result of nearly eight years of planning and a $42.9 million capital campaign, which received support from community members and artistic partners. The new space has more than doubled the company's previous seating capacity and will not only contribute to the ongoing revitalization of Uptown but also align with Mayor Johnson's city-wide efforts to promote arts and economic development.

PJ Powers, Artistic Director of TimeLine Theatre, expressed her joy at finally having a permanent home for the company after years of hard work. She emphasized that their goal was never just to build a physical space but to expand their impact, deepen their mission, uplift artists' work, engage with the community, and make a difference in the lives of younger generations. Powers stated that today marks an incredible milestone towards achieving these goals.
Founded in 1997 by six graduates of The Theatre School at DePaul University with only $50 each, TimeLine Theatre Company has grown over three decades into a vital force in Chicago's arts scene. From its humble beginnings as a 99-seat black box theater in Lakeview East church, it has now found its permanent home in Uptown thanks to the support of Mayor Johnson and the City of Chicago.
