California: Governor Newsom proclaims Small Business Month
EntSun News/11093214
~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared May 2026 as "Small Business Month" in California. With over 4.3 million small businesses, California leads the nation in entrepreneurship and economic growth.
In a proclamation issued by the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development, Governor Newsom highlighted the vital role that small businesses play in the state's economy. These businesses employ over 7.6 million people and contribute to industries ranging from high-tech to agriculture.
The proclamation also recognized the efforts of various programs and initiatives that support small businesses in California. The California Office of the Small Business Advocate and Infrastructure Bank and Economic Development (IBank) provide resources and funding for entrepreneurs at every stage of their business journey.
One such program is Accelerate California, which has invested in over 29,000 start-ups and helped create more than 105,000 jobs. The SCALE (Success, Capital Access, and Leadership for Entrepreneurs) program connects underrepresented entrepreneurs with capital, mentorship, and other tools for success.

The IBank's Small Business Finance Center offers a loan guarantee program to help small businesses access much-needed funds for growth. This program has already created or retained over 480,000 jobs.
Governor Newsom also emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive business environment for all Californians. The Expanding Venture Capital Access program aims to support underserved entrepreneurs by dedicating over $250 million in funding.
California's economy is not limited to its borders; its small businesses export $70.1 billion annually, accounting for more than 40% of the state's total exports. To maintain this strength, Governor Newsom stressed the need to ensure that all Californians have equal opportunities to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom urged Californians to recognize the contributions of small businesses and continue supporting their success. He also reaffirmed his commitment to making the "California Dream" accessible to all.
This proclamation comes on the heels of Governor Newsom's recent declaration of May 2026 as "Older Californians Month" and his efforts to secure federal assistance for Orange County's hazmat response. The Governor also proclaimed May 25, 2026, as "Memorial Day," honoring those who have sacrificed their lives for the nation.
As California continues to lead in entrepreneurship and economic growth, Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting small businesses and creating an inclusive business environment for all.
