California: Governor Gavin Newsom, Governor Katie Hobbs, and Governor Joe Lombardo release joint statement on Colorado River deadline

~ As the federal deadline for a consensus agreement on managing the Colorado River after 2026 approaches, Lower Basin Governors have released a joint statement expressing their concerns and commitment to finding a solution.

Governors Gavin Newsom of California, Katie Hobbs of Arizona, and Joe Lombardo of Nevada have all come together to address the urgency of reaching an agreement before the deadline passes for a second time without resolution. The Lower Basin states of Arizona, California, and Nevada are heavily reliant on the Colorado River, with approximately 75% of the population, employment, and agricultural crop sales in the basin located within these states. This also includes 25 out of the 30 sovereign Tribal Nations that reside within the basin.

The governors emphasize that the Colorado River is essential to their communities and economies, and their states have already taken significant steps to conserve water in recent years in order to stabilize water supplies for years to come. In order to secure a seven-state agreement for post-2026 management of the river, Arizona has offered to reduce its allocation by 27%, California by 10%, and Nevada by nearly 17%. The governors maintain that all seven basin states must share in the responsibility of conservation in order for this agreement to be successful.
