Caddo Judge Questions Safety of Public School Transportation for Young Children

EntSun News/11066834
SHREVEPORT, La. - EntSun -- Shreveport, LA — Thomas Fitzgerald, a father in Caddo Parish, is speaking out about failures in the local custody system after a family court decision placed his 5-year-old son in a school that may severely limit access to medical care, extracurricular opportunities, and time with his father.

Despite documented risks—including a past DUI with the child in the vehicle—the custody evaluator omitted critical evidence and submitted a report with an unexplained two-year delay. "Systemic failure is costing my son his well-being," says Fitzgerald. "The evaluator overlooked serious concerns, including missed medical appointments and a biased custody history. What's worse—36 pages of evaluation were never even turned over to me until after the court's ruling."

In a troubling twist, a Caddo Parish school counselor from Byrd High School testified in the custody proceedings without formal consent or authorization from the school district. "We now have school employees involving themselves in family court cases without transparency or oversight," says Fitzgerald. "If this doesn't raise red flags, what will?"

Court documents show that Angela Fitzgerald was awarded primary placement following a 2021 Texas ruling, but that decision was made without full relocation details and without a transparent review of safety issues. "We're not just talking about one family. This is about every parent fighting for fairness in an overwhelmed system," Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald is calling on local media, watchdog organizations, and legal advocates to take notice and demand accountability for flawed family court processes — including the use of school resources in court proceedings without proper channels.
