Boston: Mayor Wu Announces Extension of Operating Hours for Bars and Restaurants During Summer 2026

EntSun News/11094417
BOSTON ~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced today that bars and restaurants in the city will be allowed to serve alcohol for an extra hour, following the recent passage of a state law. This temporary extension will allow businesses with licenses to sell alcohol until 2:00 a.m. to extend their service until 3:00 a.m. through the end of July.

The decision comes as the city prepares for a busy summer, with events such as the FIFA World Cup 2026™ fan festival, Sail Boston, and Boston 250 expected to attract visitors from around the world. Mayor Wu believes that this measure will not only benefit businesses but also enhance the overall economic opportunities for Boston during this bustling season.

"We're eager for Boston's small businesses to share in the economic opportunities created by this summer's special events, building on our recent progress expanding nightlife and late-hour activity," said Mayor Wu. "We've seen real interest and benefit from initiatives like our Late Night Food Truck program creating new jobs and supporting the late-night workforce."

Businesses that currently hold licenses to serve alcohol until 2:00 a.m. can apply through the City of Boston Licensing Board to extend their alcohol and/or entertainment hours until 3:00 a.m. Additionally, licensed operators with earlier closing times may also submit an application to extend by an additional hour.

Representative Aaron Michlewitz, Chair of the House Committee on Ways & Means (D-Boston), expressed his support for this decision, stating that it will create a more fun atmosphere for residents and tourists alike while also boosting the economy for all residents.

City Council President Liz Breadon echoed these sentiments, saying, "This is a great opportunity to support our small businesses and create a more fun environment as we prepare to welcome the world to Boston."

City Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune emphasized that extending last call is necessary in order for Boston to successfully host major events like these. "You can't host the world on a bedtime," she said. "Expanded last call gives Boston an opportunity to meet the moment, support local businesses, and show visitors that our city can be as vibrant after dark as it is during the day."

The Boston Licensing Board, chaired by Kathleen Joyce, is ready to review applications and support businesses as they take advantage of this opportunity. "We expect all licensees to assist us in making this a successful summer by operating responsibly and prioritizing the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors," said Joyce.

It's important to note that establishments that have not received an extension on alcohol or entertainment hours must continue to adhere to their approved closing hours on their annual license.

In addition to the extended serving hours, the City will also soon announce a designated social district where public consumption of alcohol will be permitted. Details will be shared at a later date. However, outside of licensed premises and City-designated social districts, individuals are prohibited from consuming alcohol or possessing open containers.

Michael J. Nichols, President of the Downtown Boston Alliance, expressed his gratitude for this policy change that will benefit small businesses in the city. "By establishing social districts, we aren't just making Boston a more fun and engaging place to visit and live—we are actively driving the foot traffic our vibrant small business community relies upon to thrive," he said.

As visitors flock to Boston for various events this summer, they are encouraged to explore the Neighborhood Business Guide to discover local restaurants, shops, and activities. From large-scale celebrations to community-based programming, Boston is creating dynamic experiences in every corner of the city. Mayor Wu hopes that these initiatives will showcase not only the city's history and culture but also its strong neighborhoods.

With this temporary extension of serving hours for bars and restaurants and other initiatives in place, Boston is ready to welcome visitors from around the world for an unforgettable summer experience.
