~ Boston City Council Honors Legacy of Louis D. Brown with Annual Day of Civic Engagement

Boston, MA- The city of Boston continues to be inspired by the life and legacy of Louis D. Brown, as the City Council has officially adopted a resolution recognizing April 13th as Louis D. Brown Day of Civic Engagement.

The resolution, offered by Councilors FitzGerald and Worrell, pays tribute to Louis D. Brown, who was born on April 13, 1978. Described as an avid reader and driven by a vision of pursuing a Ph.D. and becoming the first Black President of the United States, Louis was only 15 years old when he tragically passed away.

In addition to his academic aspirations, Louis was also a passionate advocate for violence prevention. He served as a bridge-builder in his community and believed that true peace requires both individual participation and collective civic engagement.

Following his untimely death, Louis' parents Joseph and Clementina Chéry co-founded the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute in 1994 to carry forward his legacy and continue the peacemaking work he had already begun. This year marks the Institute's 32nd year of serving as a center for healing, teaching, and learning in communities impacted by violence.

The resolution acknowledges that Boston has become a more peaceful and collaborative city because of Louis' legacy and the ongoing efforts it inspires. Since 2023, the City Council has formally recognized April 13th as Louis D. Brown Day of Civic Engagement, a tradition that will continue this year with the fourth annual observance.

By adopting this resolution, the City Council reaffirms Louis' belief that everyone has a role to play in building a more peaceful world through civic action. This idea continues to guide and inspire new generations in Boston and beyond.

The annual observance serves as a reminder for individuals to honor Louis' memory by actively engaging in their communities and working towards a more peaceful society. The City Council encourages all Bostonians to participate in civic engagement on April 13th and every day, as a way to honor the life and legacy of Louis D. Brown.
