Boston: Council Advances Measures Supporting Small Business Services, Transportation Funding, and Postal Access

~ Boston City Council Adopts Resolutions to Strengthen Public Systems and Essential Services
The Boston City Council has taken significant steps towards supporting small businesses, improving transportation infrastructure, and ensuring access to essential neighborhood services. In a series of resolutions adopted by the Council, these key areas have been identified as crucial for the city's economic growth and community well-being.
Councilors Culpepper and Mejia presented a resolution in support of establishing a University Small Business Technical Assistance Partnership in Boston. This proposal aims to connect university-based student consulting programs with the city's existing small business support system through the Office of Small Business. By expanding technical assistance for local businesses, particularly in underserved neighborhoods and commercial corridors, this partnership will provide crucial support in areas such as financial management, marketing, e-commerce, operations, and procurement readiness. The resolution also calls for a pilot program to evaluate the feasibility and implementation of this initiative.

Another resolution put forth by Councilors Breadon and Pepén focuses on safeguarding state and federal funding allocated for transportation and streets projects. The measure stresses the importance of meeting funding deadlines tied to major infrastructure investments such as the Columbus Avenue Bus Lane Phase 2, the Dorchester Greenway, the Blue Hill Avenue Transportation Action Plan, and sidewalk improvements in Brighton. Delays in these projects not only jeopardize federal and state funding but also delay safety improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users.
In a separate resolution, Councilor Breadon called on the United States Postal Service (USPS) to reestablish a post office location in Allston. The Allston Post Office has been closed since 2019, leaving approximately 87,000 residents relying on the Brighton branch. This closure has had a significant impact on immigrant communities, small business owners, and elderly residents who heavily rely on postal services. Despite previous efforts to restore a post office location in Allston, no progress has been made so far.
These resolutions collectively aim to maintain and expand access to essential services that support economic activity, neighborhood connectivity, and day-to-day needs across Boston communities. The Council's focus on strengthening public systems and essential services reflects their commitment to the city's overall growth and well-being.
