Boston: Council Adopts Resolution Urging Reopening of South End Branch Library
EntSun News/11084482
~ In a unanimous decision, the Council has adopted a resolution in support of reopening the South End Branch of the Boston Public Library and recognizing the efforts of Councilor Culpepper and community advocate Marleen Nienhuis. The branch has been closed since April 2021 due to repeated flooding, leaving nearly 50,000 residents without a neighborhood library for over four years.
The closure has created a significant gap in access to essential public resources for South End residents, forcing them to rely on distant branches. Prior to its closure, the branch served as an educational and civic hub for the community, offering various programs and services such as children's programming, literacy initiatives, technology access, workforce development services, and a free gathering space.
The prolonged loss of these services has disproportionately impacted children, families, seniors, immigrants, and low-income residents. Early literacy programs, homework support, ESOL groups, computer access, and community meeting space have all been eliminated during this time.

The resolution acknowledges that South End community members and organizations have proposed feasible options for temporary library services during the closure. However, current offerings remain limited and inadequate to meet neighborhood needs.
The measure also pays tribute to Marleen Nienhuis for her significant contributions to strengthening and improving the South End Branch Library. As a longtime resident and community advocate in the area, Nienhuis was instrumental in making positive changes within the branch. In recognition of her service and commitment to the neighborhood, the community room at the branch was named in her honor.
Through this resolution, the Council urges both the City of Boston and Boston Public Library to take immediate action towards reopening the South End Branch as soon as possible. They also call for an expedited timeline for full reopening by 2027 and consistent temporary library services that are accessible and adequately resourced during the closure. Additionally, regular multi-day weekly hours and core services for children and adults are also being requested.
The Council's resolution highlights the urgent need for the South End Branch to be reopened and the impact it has had on the community. It is a call to action for the City and Boston Public Library to prioritize the needs of South End residents and provide them with essential resources through their neighborhood library.
