Boston: City Council Recognizes Crispus Attucks Day

EntSun News/11086318
~ Boston City Councilors Worrell, Flynn, and Mejia have passed a resolution recognizing March 5, 2026 as Crispus Attucks Day in the city. The resolution pays tribute to the life and legacy of Attucks, who was born into slavery in Framingham in 1723 to an African father and Native American mother.

Despite facing immense challenges, Attucks rose above his circumstances to become a skilled sailor, whaler, and respected longshoreman. However, it was on March 5, 1770 that he made the ultimate sacrifice as the first person killed in the Boston Massacre. This event would go on to spark the American Revolution.

Attucks' story continues to inspire generations as a symbol of the fight for freedom, justice, and equality. The resolution highlights Boston's ongoing commitment to honoring his life through various initiatives such as establishing a permanent monument by 2030 and hosting educational programs like the Boston Latin School Crispus Attucks Commemoration Day essay competition.

Through this designation, the Council encourages residents to reflect on Attucks' contributions and engage in activities that honor his memory. This further reinforces Boston's dedication to civil rights, social justice, and community education.
