Boston: City Council Pushes for Safer Sidewalks at Commuter Rail Stations

~ In a recent resolution proposed by Councilor Worrell, the City Council has shown their support for including sidewalk snow clearance in the upcoming commuter rail operator contract for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). This change is specifically aimed at improving conditions at commuter rail-only stations, particularly those along the Fairmount Line. Residents have reported unshoveled sidewalks for weeks, prompting the need for action.

The resolution brings attention to the fact that sidewalk clearance has been a long-standing challenge, with commuters with disabilities being disproportionately affected. It also highlights that current contracts, such as Keolis', do not assign this responsibility to the operator. Instead, it falls on City Public Works to plow hundreds of miles of roads and municipal properties.
