Boston: 2026 Open Newbury Schedule Announced
EntSun News/11093811
~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has announced the highly anticipated dates for the 2026 Open Newbury event. Since its inception in 2016, Open Newbury has become a beloved tradition for thousands of residents and visitors alike, offering a unique experience of food, shopping, and dining along the iconic mile-long stretch of Newbury Street.
This year's Open Newbury program will feature the same number of days as last year, including the successful holiday stroll date. The event will take place on Sundays from July to October, with an additional date in December to be announced at a later time.
During Open Newbury, Newbury Street will be closed to cars and open exclusively to pedestrians from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The route will remain the same as previous years, with closures from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue. Parking will also be restricted on Newbury Street and adjacent streets starting at 5:00 a.m., with signs posted to inform drivers of the change.
Mayor Wu expressed her excitement for bringing back this beloved tradition and thanked local businesses and community members for their feedback in shaping the program. She stated that Open Newbury not only brings people together but also creates opportunities for local businesses to connect with the community and welcome new customers.

Nick Gove, Interim Chief of Streets, also expressed gratitude towards the community and partners for their collaboration in making Open Newbury a vibrant and engaging tradition over the years.
The dates for Open Newbury were carefully selected with consideration for major events happening throughout the year, such as Student Move-In Weekend in August and various cultural parades and holidays. In case of severe weather, the event will be cancelled by Friday evening and not rescheduled.
District 8 City Councilor Sharon Durkan shared her excitement for the return of Open Newbury this year. She stated that it gives residents and visitors a unique way to experience one of Boston's most iconic streets while supporting over 400 local businesses. Durkan also highlighted how Open Newbury transforms the street into a pedestrian-friendly space, bringing people together and creating opportunities for community.
The continuation of Open Newbury aligns with Mayor Wu's efforts to reimagine the city's streets and make Boston a home for everyone. The first two events will shut down the road but will not include the regular programming. However, residents will still be able to access local businesses in the area. Additionally, the City has announced the return of Open Streets, a car-free event series that transforms roadways into vibrant, pedestrian-only public spaces during the summer and fall.

To further celebrate this historic summer, the City has launched various programs and initiatives such as the Summer Block Party Grant Program and Office of Cultural Affairs Mini Grant Program to support community-led celebrations and events. The Summer Fitness Series, hosted by the City's Parks and Recreation department and Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), will also offer a range of fitness classes across city parks.
Residents are encouraged to visit boston.gov/summer for more information on summer programming and events. With these initiatives in place, Mayor Wu hopes that all residents across Boston can celebrate in ways that reflect their unique neighborhoods and communities.
