EntSun News/11094707
~ Mayor Kerry Thomson of Bloomington, Indiana will be hosting a community conversation on Tuesday, June 16 to discuss the future of Kirkwood Avenue. The session will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 401 N. Morton Street.

This event comes in response to the growing interest and requests from the community for more public discussion on the matter. The recent vote by the Bloomington Common Council on legislation related to the seasonal closure of Kirkwood Avenue has sparked a need for further dialogue. Mayor Thomson has not yet made a final decision on the legislation and is actively seeking feedback and perspectives from the community.

The proposed ordinance, known as 2026-12, would require Kirkwood Avenue to be closed to automobile traffic every year from April 1 through Nov. 15, starting in 2027. The Council approved it with a close vote of 5-4 on June 10, 2026. According to city regulations, Mayor Thomson has up to ten days after the ordinance is formally presented to her to either sign or veto it. In case of a veto, the Council could override it with six votes.
