600 Emergency Shelter Beds Opening in St. Louis for Severe Cold This Weekend, Street Department Prepares for Snow

EntSun News/11082653
~ As the city of St. Louis braces for severe winter weather this weekend, the Department of Human Services has announced that they will be moving to the highest Code Blue activation level on Friday. This decision comes in anticipation of temperatures dropping to near 0°F and snowfall expected to hit the city.

According to Mayor Cara Spencer, this will be a very cold weekend in St. Louis and she encourages anyone in need of a warm place to stay to take advantage of the emergency shelters that will be made available by the city and its partners. The City and its partners have been working diligently to prepare for this severe weather, with a record number of 1,000 emergency shelter beds being made available between Friday night and Monday morning.

The City's Code Blue activation level 4 is triggered by temperatures at 10°F or below, which means an additional 600 emergency shelter beds will be added to the baseline of 400. These shelters will be open around the clock from Thursday night until Monday morning, ensuring that those staying overnight also have a warm place to stay during the daytime.

For Thursday night, when temperatures are expected to remain in the teens, the City will be at Code Blue activation level 3 with an additional 450 emergency beds being added. Transportation to shelters from rally points around the city is available at both levels 3 and 4.

Walk-up shelters will be open from Thursday through Sunday at designated locations. Walk-ups are welcome from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., after which individuals must contact the United Way 211 Helpline for shelter arrangements. Additional locations are also available by appointment coordinated through United Way or by speaking with a coordinator at a rally point. In case a walk-up shelter reaches capacity, transportation will be provided to another shelter with sufficient space.

Rally points have been set up for those seeking transportation to shelters between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., with each rally point having a warming bus or indoor facility available. Metro Call-A-Ride shuttles will transport individuals to shelters and are staffed with both a driver and an outreach worker. In case alternative transportation is needed, individuals can contact the United Way 211 Helpline.

In preparation for the expected snowfall, the Street Department has been pretreating snow routes since Wednesday morning. By Thursday morning, they had already deployed 30,000 gallons of brine and are ready to activate their fleet of snowplows once snow accumulates. The department's efforts can be augmented by additional trucks and staff from other departments if needed.

The Street Department's Winter Weather Preparedness Plan prioritizes clearing main routes first to keep traffic moving, followed by school entrances and intersections where side streets meet main roads. Next, crews will clear accumulated snow at intersections before moving on to side streets. In case of significant ice development, all available vehicles and staff from other departments will be used to break up the ice.

The City of St. Louis and its partners are closely monitoring weather conditions and will continue to provide updates on emergency shelter availability and efforts to keep streets passable as needed. Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this severe winter weather event.
