Texas: Governor Abbott Announces $166 Million In Energy Assistance Funds

EntSun News/11094304
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced a significant investment of $166 million in energy assistance funds to support low-income Texans in maintaining safe and affordable housing. The funds, which will be administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA), are set to become available on January 1, 2027.

In a statement, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of ensuring that families across the state have access to housing that protects them from extreme temperatures throughout the year. He expressed his confidence that these grants will provide much-needed assistance to those at risk of health or financial crises, allowing them to purchase cooling and heating systems for their homes. The Governor urged eligible Texans to apply for this program in order to create a safer environment for themselves and their families.

The grant awards will be used to provide various forms of support for income-eligible households, including utility bill payment assistance, energy-efficient heating, cooling, or refrigeration equipment, and consumer counseling and case management services aimed at promoting self-sufficiency. These services will be provided at the local level through 35 government or nonprofit contract holders serving all 254 counties in Texas.

According to TDHCA Executive Director Bobby Wilkinson, families with young children or elderly residents with high medical bills often struggle with the costs of energy. He believes that this funding will provide much-needed relief for these households and alleviate their concerns about heating and cooling their homes. Wilkinson also stressed the importance of helping vulnerable citizens avoid potential health or financial crises through this funding.

The funding is made possible through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Low-Income Household Energy Assistance Program and the Weatherization Assistance Program.
