HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Nov. 20, 2017 - EntSun -- A new partnership between the Sundance Institute's New Frontier Lab initiative and the Technicolor Experience Center (TEC) will connect storytellers and technologists in a collaborative artist-in-residency program designed to elevate innovative forms of storytelling using virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and other immersive media applications, says Marcie Jastrow, Senior Vice President of Immersive Media for Technicolor and head of the Technicolor Experience Center (TEC), in a podcast interview for journalists.

The TEC is focused on developing high-concept content, platforms and technology for immersive media and creating a vibrant ecosystem that advances the state-of-the-art in this new form of storytelling. Sundance Institute's New Frontier Lab Programs identifies and fosters innovative storytellers and is designed to build a community of collaborators across diverse disciplines to push the boundaries of storytelling.

The two organizations have teamed up to create an artist-in-residency program that pairs artists and technology experts from Technicolor to work together on immersive media projects that combine compelling and rich content with a variety of leading-edge technologies, such as gaming engines and high-powered workstations, that the artists otherwise might not have access to. In addition, the program will help connect artist with TEC partners who may have funding or other assistance to support the artists and their projects.

"The Sundance Institute's New Frontier Lab has really forged the ground for immersive media. Four years ago, they started bringing out VR and AR and really highlighting immersive media's potential. They truly understand this space and how to find artists who understand how to build on where the industry is today and where we're going to go in the future," says Jastrow. "For TEC, the partnership is important because it lets us work with cutting-edge artists and projects that are pushing the boundaries of storytelling, and it will help us gain knowledge in how immersive media will progress."

The Sundance Institute's New Frontier Lab and TEC is kicking off its partnership with three new projects that combine creativity and technology – using VR, AR, mixed reality and even artificial intelligence to tell stories in immersive media.

• A project by Laura Wexler and Charlotte Stoudt that uses VR, AR, immersive media and even artificial intelligence to tell the story of intriguing historical incidents that deal with the supernatural and the unexplained.

• A project by Eline Jongsma and Kel O'Neill that explores the relationship between children and their parents and uses immersive media to illustrate the power of imagination that children when living amidst the tension of their parents' marital strife.

• A project by Lynette Walworth that uses VR, mixed reality and immersive media to transport people into the real experiences of indigenous communities around the world.

These projects, and the partnership between The Sundance Institute's New Frontier Lab and TEC, gives Technicolor the opportunity to inject its technical capabilities into innovative, immersive storytelling and be a key partner in a larger community that's helping artists achieve their visions, says Jastrow.

"We can't grow this ecosystem one company at a time, it's going to take many people and a lot of feedback as to what's working and what's not to really understand the implications of immersive media to creative technology and storytelling."
