Mayor Brandon Johnson Participates In Food Distributions Across Chicago Ahead Of Thanksgiving

CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson was seen today participating in food distribution events across the city as community organizations come together to support families in need ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. The events, which took place in the West Loop, West Englewood, North Lawndale, and South Deering neighborhoods, were part of Mayor Johnson's ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity and support those facing challenges due to interruptions in federal SNAP benefits.

"Chicagoans should never have to worry about where their next meal will come from," said Mayor Johnson. "As we enter the holiday season, we are working closely with our community partners to ensure that food pantries, which have been impacted by Trump's cuts, are supported and that working families across Chicago have access to the relief they need. Together, we are standing with our neighbors and strengthening the community networks that keep families protected."

The food distribution events were held at Safer Foundation on S Kedzie Ave., Evening Star Ministries on W 59th St., Marillac St. Vincent on S Francisco Ave., and Thanksgiving Light in the Night Turkey Giveaway on E 106th St. Throughout the past week, Mayor Johnson has been meeting with community aid leaders and food pantry volunteers at various organizations throughout the city to better understand how the City can effectively direct efforts to protect food security.

On Thursday morning, Mayor Johnson visited the Salvation Army Freedom Center in Humboldt Park where he met with workers and received an overview of their SNAP-related food distribution efforts and current resident needs. Later that evening, he visited Heritage International Community Development Corporation where he worked alongside volunteers during a distribution event serving members of the Austin community.

Over the weekend, Mayor Johnson joined community members for a Thanksgiving Celebration and Food Drive at Michele Clark Magnet High School in Austin. He also visited the construction site of the new South Side Islamic Center in South Chicago for Zakat Chicago's annual Holiday Turkey Giveaway.

Earlier this month, Mayor Johnson signed an executive order directing additional City resources to community organizations in response to the upcoming SNAP 'benefits cliff' resulting from federal changes to eligibility requirements. The order authorized emergency procurement flexibility to expedite the direction of City resources to food pantries and small businesses as needed.
