Film explores 1969 trial that wrote the rules for free expression

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - EntSun -- Fifty years after Woodstock and the Stonewall Riots, a new documentary looks back a wild, but impactful 1969 Northern California indecency trial to tell a broader story about the limits to sexual expression 50 years later.

The California-based filmmakers of "Do the Dance" will be in the New York area to interview several notable authors, sex worker advocates, and performers from June 17 to June 24.

The documentary will be an important statement on the state of free expression in the wake of the Me Too movement, as women's reproductive rights are being cut, and women challenge for the White House, the filmmakers say.

The 1969 trial over "bottomless" dancing at Sacramento beer bar lept on to national headlines after Judge Earl Warren Jr. decided that the jury needed to see the dancer "Do the Dance."

The case helped write the rules for exotic dance in California and beyond.

The project -- which also explores pole fitness, the burlesque revival, and social media censorship -- is 50 percent shot with additional shoots expected in Georgia, Florida, and San Francisco.

"Just as judge Warren dared put the dance in its element, our challenge is to put this project in its element," said Ed Fletcher, a longtime Sacramento journalist and filmmaker.

The traveling team includes Fletcher, director/producer DQ Hayes and director of /photography Jessica Gallant.

The completed film is expected to screen at prestige festivals in 2020, before a series of speaking/performance tour dates and finally digital distribution.
