Dallas Neurologist Highlights Disability Insurance Obstacles
EntSun News/11070946
Dr. Sharisse Stephenson, a Dallas-based neurologist, is drawing attention to the struggles workers face with disability insurance.
DALLAS - EntSun -- Dr. Sharisse Stephenson, a triple board-certified neurologist, is speaking out about the challenges workers face when navigating disability insurance — a struggle she only came to understand after requiring benefits herself.
"I've spent my career treating patients with brain injury, trauma, and neurological conditions," said Dr. Stephenson. "But when I became the patient, I quickly learned how difficult it can be to access disability benefits when you need them most."
Dr. Stephenson's experience included coverage with Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, where she personally encountered delays that made recovery harder. After doing further research, she discovered she was not alone. Federal court records show multiple ERISA cases filed each year over disputed disability benefits, and a simple Google search turns up entire law firms citing Sun Life alongside "disability denials." On online forums like Reddit, everyday workers share stories of obstacles they faced while trying to use benefits during unexpected illness or injury.

While issues like prior authorization and rising healthcare costs are widely discussed, Dr. Stephenson emphasizes that problems in disability insurance often receive less attention. "These delays and denials can destabilize families at their most vulnerable moments," she said. "We talk a lot about healthcare reform, but we also need to talk about the safety net workers are promised and why so many struggle to access it."
Dr. Stephenson has since begun using her platform on social media to highlight the broader pattern of difficulties in disability coverage and to advocate for greater accountability in the industry.
