California: Governor Newsom proclaims World AIDS Day
EntSun News/11078580
~ Sacramento, CA - On December 1, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation declaring it as World AIDS Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of the AIDS epidemic and honoring those who have been affected by it.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom expressed solidarity with the more than 40 million people around the world living with HIV/AIDS and remembered those who have lost their lives to this disease. He also highlighted the work that still needs to be done in order to combat this crisis.
The governor acknowledged that California has a long history of being at the forefront of progress and research in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 1981, when the earliest cases of AIDS were identified in California and New York, stigma and discrimination made it difficult for those affected to access care and treatment. It took four years for President Ronald Reagan to publicly acknowledge AIDS and even longer for real action to be taken.
Governor Newsom also noted that this year, with the federal government not acknowledging World AIDS Day, there is a concerning return to silence on this issue. He emphasized that California will not be silent and will continue to support research efforts to improve treatments and eliminate new infections.

The governor highlighted some of California's achievements in this fight, such as the opening of the world's first outpatient AIDS clinic at University of California San Francisco in 1983. The state's "San Francisco Model of HIV Care" has been used as a model for chronic disease management worldwide. Additionally, California's universal antiretroviral treatment has become national guidelines and has been endorsed by the World Health Organization.
Governor Newsom also mentioned legislation he has signed to prevent insurance companies from discriminating based on HIV status and streamline processes for better care. He emphasized that today marks an important moment as California officially recognizes World AIDS Day for the first time.
In conclusion, Governor Newsom proclaimed December 1, 2025 as World AIDS Day in California and urged all residents to join in this global moment of unity in support of those affected by HIV/AIDS and in honor of those who have lost their lives to this disease.
This proclamation comes on the heels of Governor Newsom's recent celebration of Small Business Saturday, where he encouraged residents to support their local communities by shopping at small businesses. The governor also proclaimed Thanksgiving Day and led a historic delegation at COP30, where new global partnerships were formed and California's clean energy records were highlighted.
